The United States takes steps in the right direction, but the blockade remains in force.

Declaration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba

On January 14, 2025, the government of the United States announced the following decisions:

  1. Remove Cuba from the State Department list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism;
  1. Make use of the presidential faculty to prevent US courts from taking action with regards to lawsuits that might be filed by virtue of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act; and
  1. Eliminate the list of restricted Cuban entities that designates a group of institutions which US citizens and institutions are not allowed to make financial transactions with, which has had an impact on third countries.

Despite its limited scope, this is a decision that points to the right direction and is in line with the sustained and firm demand by the government and the people of Cuba, as well as the broad, emphatic and reiterated call by numerous governments, particularly those of Latin America and the Caribbean; Cubans residing abroad; political, religious and social organizations and numerous political figures of the United States and other countries.  The government of Cuba expresses its gratitude to all of them for their contribution and sensitivity.

Statement by the Permanent Delegation of Cuba to UNESCO on the march against the blockade and Cuba's presence on the list of States that allegedly sponsor terrorism.

Paris, December 21, 2024. The Cuban people turned a new page of dignity and rebellion this Friday, December 20, when more than 500,000 citizens of the capital marched along the Havana Malecón to demand an end to the genocidal blockade and the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States government against Cuba.

At the head of this mass mobilization were the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, and the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, who, accompanied by the Commander of the Rebel Army, José Ramón Machado Ventura, and other leaders of the Party, the State, the Government, the political and mass organizations and the armed forces, guided this tide of people in their march for justice, for life, for dignity.

UNESCO participates in the International Conference “Cuba 2024: Decade for People of African Descent”

Paris, 10 December 2024. UNESCO actively participated in the International Conference “Cuba 2024: Decade for People of African Descent” from 9 to 13 December in Havana.

In his virtual message at the opening session, the Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations, Mr. Firmin Edouard Matoko, conveyed the Organization's support for this initiative, which he described as a notable example of Cuba's commitment to the International Decade for People of African Descent, fully aligned with UNESCO's mandate.

UNESCO declares Casabe as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Paris, 5 December 2024. Within the framework of the 19th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Asunción, Paraguay, UNESCO officially recognized the traditional knowledge and practices for the production and consumption of Casabe as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The proposal, presented by Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, is a reflection of the commitment of our nations to safeguard living heritage.

UNESCO justified the declaration of Casabe as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its relevance as a symbol of identity, social cohesion and sustainable development in Caribbean communities, while underlining the role of Casabe in preserving peace and dialogue between communities, and its importance as a cultural identity reference in the region.
