Cuba shares its experience in IUCN panel on the potential of the Preliminary Assessment process for World Heritage nominations

Paris, 11 July 2025. In the framework of the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, the Cuban delegation took part in a panel organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), dedicated to discussing the potential of the Preliminary Assessment process for World Heritage nominations, which will become mandatory as of 2027.

Cuban Delegation Denounces at the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee the Impact of the U.S. Blockade on Heritage Preservation

Paris, 9 July 2025. The Permanent Delegation of Cuba to UNESCO denounced before the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee the effects of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the Government of the United States against Cuba, which constitutes a major obstacle to the management, conservation, and restoration of the country’s cultural and natural heritage.

During her intervention in the debate on global challenges to heritage protection, Laura Alvarez Delgado, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Permanent Delegation of Cuba to UNESCO, emphasized that despite progress achieved in national policy frameworks, the blockade severely hampers the implementation of projects, the acquisition of specialized materials and technologies, and access to financing and international cooperation.

Cuban Delegation Addresses the 47th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee on Heritage Management in Small Island Developing States

Paris, 8 July 2025. Within the framework of the 47th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, the Cuban delegation took the floor during the agenda item devoted to reviewing progress in supporting Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The delegation highlighted Cuba’s ongoing efforts in climate change mitigation and adaptation, particularly in response to sea level rise. The intervention also underscored the restoration of the Convent of Santa Clara in Havana, a historic building that will host an institution dedicated to capacity-building in conservation and restoration for the Caribbean, benefiting SIDS in the region.

Cuban Delegation Holds Working Meetings with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre

Paris, 7 July 2025. In the framework of the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee, the Cuban delegation held working meetings with officials and technical teams from the World Heritage Centre responsible for Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as with the unit in charge of nominations, with the aim of following up on cooperation matters and ongoing projects.
