Cuba participates in the 17th Session of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

Paris, 28 February. The Seventeenth Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions will be held at UNESCO Headquarters from 27 February to 1 March 2024. 

On this session, the Committee will follow up on the implementation of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, the results of the call for experts for the Reflection Group on the diversity of cultural expressions in the digital environment, as well as the preliminary proposals concerning the Reflection Group on the implementation of Article 16 on “Preferential treatment for developing countries.”; as well as proposals to streamline the quadrennial periodic reporting cycle.

In addition, the Committee will examine the applications submitted and the projects recommended under the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD), while reaffirming the fundamental role of the IFCD in implementing the Convention. 

The Commitee is composed by 24 Member States, elected by the Conference of the Parties to the Convention for a four-year term, promotes and monitors the implementation of this fundamental international normative instrument for the protection and promotion of cultural diversity.

Cuba participates as a Member State, following its election at the Assembly of States Parties to the 2005 Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, in June 2021. The Cuban Delegation is headed by Yahima Esquivel Moynelo, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Cuba to UNESCO and integrated also by Yailin Castro Loredo, Second Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to UNESCO.

As part of the debates, the Ambassador of Cuba reaffirmed our country's commitment with the implementation of international instruments in this area and to continue working with UNESCO in the global recognition of Culture as a driver of Sustainable Development.
