Jakarta, August 12- Sponsored by the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, the 44th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) was held in the capital city under the theme "Responsive Parliaments for a Stable and Prosperous ASEAN."
With a strong commitment to strengthen cooperation among member countries in pursuit of common prosperity and regional stability, the event brought together parliamentary representatives from the ten countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). They reaffirmed the fundamental role of the bloc as a key actor on the international stage and the need to continue working together to ensure a stable and prosperous future for the region.
Within the framework of the Assembly, parliamentarians exchanged views on various regional matters, including post-pandemic economic recovery, regional security, environmental sustainability, promotion of human rights, and enhancement of intra-ASEAN connectivity.
Legislators shared successful strategies to stimulate economic growth and protect vulnerable communities. The importance of cooperation in vaccine procurement and distribution was emphasized, as well as the need to strengthen regional trade ties for sustainable recovery.
Regarding regional security, issues such as countering terrorism, cybersecurity, and stability in the South China Sea were addressed. Parliamentarians reaffirmed their commitment to working together to ensure peace and security in the region, as well as to peacefully resolve disputes in accordance with international law.
Highlighting the significance of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting peaceful solutions and building bridges among nations, the 44th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly concluded with a spirit of cooperation and determination. Parliamentary leaders reaffirmed their commitment to foster unity and solidarity among member countries to address common challenges and achieve shared prosperity.
In a year where Indonesia holds the ASEAN Chairmanship, the 44th AIPA assembly has been a critical platform to discuss regionally relevant topics, enhance collaboration among parliaments, and reaffirm the commitment to work together for the benefit of ASEAN citizens.
More than 600 delegates from AIPA parliaments, AIPA's strategic partners, and observers attended the General Assembly. For Cuba, a country aspiring to become an Observer member, Ambassador Tania Velázquez López, accredited to Indonesia and ASEAN, participated.
The AIPA General Assembly, an annual forum that convenes legislators from member countries and external partners, primarily aims to promote dialogue and cooperation to address common challenges facing Southeast Asia.
