Cuba participates in the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh, July 22nd – Cuba participates in the 56th edition of the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), which is held in Saudi Arabia’s capital from July 22nd to 29th, 2024.

The Island is represented at the event by a small delegation made up of the young talents Mario Luis Pérez Brito and Héctor Manuel Domínguez Pérez, who have Dr. Gerardo Manuel Ojeda Carralero as their mentor.

The IChO's fundamental objective is to stimulate students to seek excellence in this area of science and promote the relationship between students, teachers and scientists from different parts of the world. It is a competition for students at the secondary school level and it is celebrated in a different country each year.

IChO 2024 brings together 333 students from 90 countries, who will be evaluated by 250 chemistry experts. In this case, it is organized by the King Abdulaziz Foundation and its Partners for Giftedness and Creativity, known as “Mawhiba”, in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education and the King Saud University. Additionally, Saudi Arabia Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) is its exclusive sponsor.

Contestants in this academic event will compete for 35 gold, 70 silver and 110 bronze medals, as well as 10 honorary certificates. Its final results will be announced on July 28th.

Cuba has attended the IChO since its founding in Prague in 1968 and has earned a reputation for its outstanding participation there. Two Cuban students won a bronze medal in its 55th edition, held last year in 2023 in Switzerland. (EmbaCuba Arabia Saudita)
