Hangzhou, 22 September 2025. — From 22 to 25 September, Engineer Lázaro Márquez Llauger, Vice President of the Cuban MAB Committee and Director of the Guanahacabibes National Park, represents the Republic of Cuba at the 5th UNESCO World Congress of Biosphere Reserves. The congress, which brings together more than 2,000 experts, scientists, managers and government representatives, is being held in Hangzhou, China, with the aim of shaping the future of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
During the meeting, the Cuban delegation will share its experience in three key areas: island and coastal biosphere reserve networks, participation in the IberoMAB Network, and contributions to the session on mangrove restoration in Latin America and the Caribbean. Cuba highlights that its biosphere reserves, through scientific zoning and collaborative governance, serve as examples of innovation and resilience in the face of a changing planet.
On this occasion, the Hangzhou Strategic Action Plan 2026–2035 will also be adopted, aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the Paris Agreement, as defined by UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
Cuba’s participation in this international forum reaffirms its commitment to natural heritage conservation, sustainable development, and regional cooperation. Through its biosphere reserves, the country actively contributes to achieving global goals on biodiversity, climate, and sustainable living.
