New York, February 6, 2024.- The sustainable development goals are increasingly further from being achieved, especially when financing wars and producing weapons is prioritized over investing in sustainable development, Cuba warned this day at the United Nations.
Ambassador Yusnier Romero Puentes, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, referred during his remarks at the general discussion of the 62nd session of the Commission for Social Development, that the current international economic order only multiplies inequalities, poverty, hunger and exclusion, and demanded that international financial institutions be reformed urgently.
Full employment, together with the eradication of poverty and social inclusion, can only be achieved by guaranteeing universal access to quality education, universal health coverage, equal opportunities, social protection, the transfer of resources, technologies and knowledge and strengthening international cooperation, including North-South, South-South and triangular cooperation, he explained.
“National efforts in favor of social development must be supported with concrete actions that show a true spirit of solidarity and international cooperation,” stated the Cuban diplomat.
In the case of Cuba, the Ambassador explained that despite the country's complex economic situation, exacerbated by the intensification of the cruel and unjust blockade imposed by the United States government more than six decades ago, the country is advancing in compliance. of the 2030 Agenda, with inclusive policies for access to quality jobs.
Later, he explained that for the Caribbean nation, social protection, more than a guarantee of employment, salary and economic security, is a constitutional right. “In this sense, we work on the implementation of the Dignified Work Programme, the Programme for Strengthening Safety and Health at Work and on an Employment Management Service that contributes to the incorporation into working life of groups in situations of vulnerability,” he said.
