Cuba participates in opening ceremony of mangrove forest restoration project in Thailand
Organized by the National Legislative Assembly, on May 18th, 2017 the inaugural ceremony of the mangrove forest restoration project presided by His Royal Highness, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, took place in Chanthaburi province. In the event, to which the diplomatic corps was invited, the Cuban Ambassador Héctor Conde Almeida participated and planted a tree on behalf of Cuba.
Prof. Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, President of the National Legislative Assembly, pointed out that the negative effects of over-exploitation of mangrove forests constitute a national environmental problem.
The ceremony is part of the national campaign for reforestation and sustainable use of mangrove forests, which highlights its economic, social and environmental benefits. The event paid tribute to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej for his personal contribution to the development of this type of projects and emphasized the importance of mangrove forests in combating the impacts of climate change.
