Cuba participates in the Thematic Debate on “Strengthening the accountability, transparency and institutional memory of the Office of the President of the General Assembly”.

This Thursday, the Thematic Debate on “Strengthening the accountability, transparency and institutional memory of the Office of the President of the General Assembly” was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Third Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations, Maibel Costa Ramírez, stressed how important it is that the work stemming from the functions of the President of the General Assembly is made known to the Member States. She also stated that transparency in the performance of his duties contributes to the achievement of the purposes of the United Nations and reaffirms his commitment to the principles contained in the Charter.

Likewise, she asserted that Cuba welcomes the handover reports issued in recent years by the outgoing Presidents of the General Assembly, a practice that contributes to making the work of the incoming President of the General Assembly more effective and coherent. She called for this practice to continue in the future.

She also called for the negotiation process of the next resolution on the Revitalization of the work of the General Assembly that will take place over the coming months, to be conducted in such manner that would allow further progress towards the effectiveness and efficiency of the work of this important body and the Office of its President.

Costa Ramírez concluded by highlighting that strengthening the accountability, transparency and institutional memory of the Office of the President of the General Assembly is essential not only to continue promoting the efficiency of the United Nations, but also to contribute to the collective efforts towards multilateralism.
