Stockholm, September 22, 2022—Once again, Cuba was present at the central edition of the Race for Peace (Fredsloppet) held in Gothenburg, organized by the Proletaren FF Sports Club.
This edition, dedicated to solidarity with the Palestinian and Cuban peoples, was marked by the impressive number of people who responded to the call for peace. Alongside Palestinian flags and the rejection of the genocide in Gaza, Cuban flags waved, carried by friends in solidarity as a visible show of support for the Island.
In her remarks to those present during an interview with Proletaren newspaper, the Cuban Ambassador expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and recalled that over 1,500 professionals have been trained in Cuba since 1974 as a gesture of support for the brotherly people. She also highlighted the Island’s decision to grant 200 scholarships to professionals from that nation over the next five years, as recently announced by President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
The Cuban diplomat emphasized the importance of peace, non-aggression, and respect for the independence of peoples. She condemned the intensification of the inhumane U.S. blockade against Cuba and shared information about the upcoming presentation at the UN General Assembly of the resolution project, "The Necessity of Ending the Economic, Financial, and Commercial Blockade by the United States Against Cuba."
Special attention was given to the demand to remove the Island from the infamous list of countries allegedly sponsoring terrorism, highlighting the consequences of this illegal measure and, at the same time, thanking the solidarity Cuba has received from friends around the world, especially in Sweden. The demands of 123 countries at the Human Rights Commission, 35 former Presidents, and over 600 parliamentarians from 73 countries for Cuba’s removal from the list were mentioned as examples of the international mobilization this issue has generated.
The day was filled with particular emotion, as hundreds of people gathered at Slottsskogen Park, the site of the race, to express their rejection of genocide in any form, while also participating in various race modalities, cultural performances, and engaging in exchanges and interviews.
