Cuba reaffirms compromise with United Nations disarmament mechanism.

New York, April 3rd, 2023.- During his remarks at the general debate of the UN Disarmament Commission, Gerardo Peñalver Portal, first deputy minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, reaffirmed the compromise of his country with the United Nations mechanism to disarmament.

Peñalver Portal called for the adoption of specific recommendations to be presented to the General Assembly on issues under examination, related to nuclear disarmament and ultra-terrestrial space, and urged to take into account the recommendations by NAM, integrated by historical and just causes from more than two thirds of the UN member States.

While emphasizing the need to achieve recommendations in order to fulfil the goal of nuclear disarmament, Peñalver Portal defended the universalization of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, an instrument that contributes to the an effective general and integral disarmament and the maintenance of international peace and security.

The Cuban diplomat also recalled the needed negotiations and due adoption of a treaty for the prevention of arms race in the ultra-terrestrial space that prohibits the deployment of arms in that scenario and complements the current legal regime.
