Cuba Reaffirms its Commitment to Gender Equality and the Eradication of Violence against Women

This Tuesday, in the framework of the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), during the high-level interactive dialogue on freedom from violence, stigma and stereotypes, Zonya Rivero López, Second Secretary of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC), stressed Cuba’s commitment to eradicating gender-based violence and promoting gender equality.

In her statement, Rivero López highlighted that the Cuban Constitution recognizes the right to a life free of violence and in a family scenario, and the responsibility of the State in implementing protection measures. She emphasized the importance of prevention and the improvement of mechanisms for the protection the victims, with a systemic, multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral approach.

In this sense, he stated that in our country this issue is a government priority. In terms of legal frameworks and public policies, she mentioned the National Program for the Advancement of Women and the Integral Strategy for Prevention and Attention to Gender Violence and the Family Scenario, which allow for the identification, prevention, attention, accompaniment and reparation of victims in a coordinated manner. She highlighted the articulation of these rules with the Family Code and the Criminal Code, which criminalizes the death of a woman for gender-related reasons and regulates 36 amendments related to gender-based violence.

She also highlighted the updating of institutional action protocols, the care provided by counselling centers, the approval of the Action Protocol in Case of Discrimination, Violence and Harassment in the Workplace, and the measures taken to create integrated and comprehensive services.

The Cuban official concluded by reaffirming Cuba's commitment to gender equality, the empowerment of women and the eradication of all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to share her country's experiences and reaffirmed her commitment to a comprehensive approach in the fight against gender-based violence.
