At the side event of the Group of Friends in Defense of the United Nations Charter, held on the occasion of the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, reaffirmed his country's firm commitment to the defense of peace, respect for international law and the strengthening of multilateralism.
In his speech, Mr. Soberón supported the statements made by Uganda, on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement, and Venezuela, on behalf of the Group of Friends, and welcomed the holding of the meeting on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
He emphasized the historical significance of 24 April, a day that coincided with the conclusion of the Afro-Asian Conference of Bandung in 1955, the cradle of the principles that gave birth to the Non-Aligned Movement, a key space in defense of multilateralism.
Soberón called for reflection on the current challenges facing the international community, denouncing the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people and the aggressive policies of the United States government based on "imperialist and racist exceptionalism" and the imposition of unilateral coercive measures contrary to international law.
