This Tuesday, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, was held the open debate of the Security Council on the theme: “Practicing multilateralism, reforming and improving global governance”.
Cuba’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, drew attention to the current international situation, characterized by serious and growing threats to international peace and security and a progressive erosion of multilateralism.
In this regard, he highlighted the withdrawal of the world’s largest power from international organizations, with absolute disregard for multilateralism; its support and participation, without ethical or moral qualms, in the expansion of the genocide against the Palestinian people; its statements on plans for land usurpation, ethnic cleansing and annexation; the elevation of racist and supremacist ideology; the violation of environmental agreements to benefit transnational corporations, without taking into account the risks to the sustainability of life on our planet.
In the face of this scenario, he reaffirmed the importance of the United Nations’ role and stressed the fundamental importance of the full respect for the principles and purposes of the Charter and the norms of international lawn in the face of the unprecedented challenges facing the international community.
He called for a profound transformation of the Organization to enable progress towards a democratic, just and equitable world order that respects the sovereign equality of States for the benefit of present and future generations.
The Deputy Foreign Minister condemned the presence of Cuba on the arbitrary and unilateral US list of State sponsors of terrorism, an instrument of coercion and aggression rejected by the international community.
Likewise, he rejected the use of unilateral coercive economic measures as a means to achieve foreign policy objectives, stressing that “as long as punitive approaches against developing countries do not cease, there can be no question of a genuine and inclusive multilateralism for all”.
The Cuban diplomat concluded by reaffirming Cuba’s commitment to multilateralism and global governance, expressing Cuba’s willingness to work with the international community to ensure peaceful coexistence, maintain international peace and security, and find lasting solutions to systemic problems.
