Cuba Reaffirms its Commitment to Nuclear Disarmament at the United Nations

This Tuesday, the general exchange of views among States continued at the annual session of the Disarmament Commission at United Nations Headquarters in New York, which began on April 7.

In his statement, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, supported the statement made by Indonesia on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), highlighting the legitimate aspirations of more than two-thirds of UN Member States.

The Cuban diplomat stressed the need for the Commission to move forward to adopt concrete recommendations next year, with the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament. He also stressed that the conditions that have hindered this priority objective should not prevail.

"As representatives of a country in the Latin American and Caribbean region, a proclaimed Zone of Peace, and a State Party to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the Treaty of Tlatelolco, and the CTBT, we insist on the moral and legal imperative of a world free of nuclear weapons," Ambassador Soberón stated.

Regarding the impact of emerging technologies on international peace and security, he stressed that Cuba favors discussions focusing on the military dimension of artificial intelligence. He added that it was crucial that it be discussed within the framework of the United Nations, with the participation of all States on an equal footing.

He concluded by reiterating Cuba's unwavering commitment to multilateralism as the only viable way to make progress in international disarmament negotiations. He also emphasized the importance of fulfilling the mandates of the Disarmament Commission and other bodies of the disarmament machinery, stressing their crucial role in promoting international peace and security.
