Cuba reaffirms its deep concern at the threat posed to the human species by the existence of nuclear weapons.

New York, 6 September 2018. Cuba reaffirmed its deep concern at the increasingly dangerous existence of nuclear weapons and the threat these weapons pose to the survival of the human species, during UNGA High-Level Meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day against Nuclear Tests held in the United Nations Headquarters.

The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the Organization, Ambassador Anayansi Rodriguez Camejo, expressed concern that nuclear-weapon States had lowered the threshold for considering the use of such weapons. It is unacceptable that nuclear-weapon States continue to develop new nuclear weapons systems and modernize existing ones. Accelerating rearmament and the nuclear arms race could bring humanity to the brink of a nuclear conflict with dire effects, she added.

Within the framework of the commemoration of the International Day against Nuclear Tests, the Cuban diplomat reaffirmed her support for the total and effective prohibition of all types of nuclear weapons tests, as well as the closure and dismantling of all facilities used for such purposes and the associated infrastructure.

Cuba is honored to have been the fifth State to ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, noted Rodríguez Camejo. In this context, she called upon the Member States that have not yet done so to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons for its prompt entry into force; and to ensure the highest level participation in the meeting to be held on 26 September to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
