New York, 26 June 2026. – Cuba's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, reaffirmed today his country's unwavering commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter at the informal meeting convened by the President of the General Assembly to mark United Nations Charter Day.
In his address, the Cuban diplomat noted that this commemoration comes at a time of a complex international scenario, characterized by the proliferation of armed conflicts, rising geopolitical tensions, the persistence of deep economic and social inequalities, as well as the worsening impacts of climate change. He stressed that millions of people continue to suffer from starvation, poverty and forced displacement.
Ambassador Soberón highlighted that, in the face of these challenges, the continued relevance of the United Nations Charter is more necessary than ever today. He emphasized that its purposes are the fundamental basis for preserving international peace and security, and for strengthening international cooperation as a means of addressing the common challenges facing humanity.
The Permanent Representative expressed his concern over the ongoing violations of the principles enshrined in the Charter, including threats or the use of force, interference in states' internal affairs, policies of regime change, the imposition of unilateral coercive measures that are contrary to international law, and attempts to impose hegemonic visions that undermine the international order and endanger global stability.
In this context, he strongly condemned the United States' military threats against Cuba and denounced the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed against the island, including the energy siege. These measures inflict severe hardship on the Cuban people and contravene the principles of international law and of the United Nations Charter itself.
The Cuban representative reiterated that the defense of the Charter implies safeguarding the sovereign equality of states, the right of peoples to self-determination, respect for independence and territorial integrity, as well as non-interference in internal affairs. He also called for strengthening multilateralism, preserving the central role of the United Nations and promoting collective solutions based on dialogue, cooperation, solidarity and mutual respect.
