New York, 28 July 2026.- Cuba reaffirmed on Tuesday at the Security Council quarterly open debate on the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, that the only way to achieve just and lasting peace in the region lies in the strict respect for the UN Charter, the end of Israeli occupation of the Palestinian and Arab territories, and the admission of Palestine as a full member state of the United Nations.
Cuba’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, strongly condemned the latest military attacks by the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran, considering them a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, and warned that these actions aggravate regional stability. In addition, he ratified Cuba’s commitment to respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, good neighborliness, restraint, and dialogue as much-needed pillars for peacekeeping.
The Cuban diplomat denounced that Israel’s persistent occupation, the disproportionate use of force, and impunity in the face of serious violations of international law, undertaken with the political, military, financial and diplomatic support of the United States, continue to strengthen the spiral of violence in the Middle East. He condemned the murder of Palestinian civilians, including women and children, the use of hunger as a method of war, the deliberate destruction of essential civil infrastructure, and the restrictions imposed on humanitarian assistance, practices he qualified as serious violations of international law, and the resolutions of the United Nations.
Soberón Guzmán reiterated that it is urgent to end the genocide against the Palestinian people and move towards a comprehensive two-state solution, with an independent and sovereign Palestinian state within the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as well as guaranteeing the right of return for refugees. It also demanded the cessation of Israeli aggression against Lebanon, Israel’s total and unconditional withdrawal from the Syrian Golan and all occupied Arab territories, and full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the states in the region.
In the final part of his statement, the Permanent Representative denounced the policy of coercion, blockades and unilateral coercive measures as a direct threat to international peace and security. In this context, he warned about the intensification of the US policy of aggression against Cuba, marked by an economic blockade of almost seven decades, a severe energy siege, the application of extraterritorial measures and repeated threats of military aggression, in open violation of the Charter of the United Nations, international law and the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
Finally, Cuba urged the Security Council to act responsibly and in accordance with its mandate to prevent further military escalation and defend multilateralism, while reiterating its call for building an international order based on respect for sovereignty, the sovereign equality of States, an end to blockades and unilateral coercive measures, and a commitment to peace, justice and development for all peoples.
