Cuba recognizes ECLAC's efforts towards the economic integration of the region and the fulfillment of the SDGs.

New York, October 17th, 2023.- The efforts of developing countries are not enough to implement the 2030 Agenda, they must be supported by concrete actions on market access, financing under fair and preferential conditions, technology transfer and North-South cooperation, Cuba said today at the 37th session of the Committee of the Whole of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

In the debate on the presentation of the economic context of Latin America, Ambassador Gerardo Peñalver Portal, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, reasoned about the need for greater regional cooperation and the strengthening of the multilateral framework, in the face of multiple and growing global and regional challenges.

He referred to the G77-China Summit in Havana and its urgent call to bring science, technology and innovation to the inalienable goal of sustainable development.

He said that in that conclave, the work of the Consortium of Science, Technology and Innovation for the South was resumed, in order to promote joint research projects and promote productive chains that reduce dependence on the markets of the North.

He considered that, for the region, the reaffirmation of the principles of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, including equity and common but differentiated responsibilities, continues to be vital.

The Cuban representative recognized ECLAC's reports and studies as true guidelines for the nations of the region in the areas of sustainable development, "with analyses that reinforce the need to accelerate the pace of implementation and awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals."
