Cuba recognizes the IAEA's contribution to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

New York, November 8, 2023.-  Ambassador Gerardo Peñalver Portal, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, spoke at the plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the "Report of the International Atomic Energy Agency".

During his remarks, Peñalver Portal reiterated Cuba's support for the important work of the IAEA and its contribution to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. He also thanked the IAEA Department of Technical Cooperation for its efforts to meet the proposed objectives for the country programmes.

He explained that as part of the IAEA's Technical Cooperation program, Cuba hosted, in May 2023, the regional meeting on the authorization process in the evaluation of the safety of medical and industrial facilities, which made it possible to acquire and share experiences in this regard with other Latin American countries.

In the same context, it advocated respect for the inalienable right of States to develop research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, without discrimination or conditions.

Cuba remains convinced that the only guarantee against the use of nuclear weapons is their total elimination in a transparent, verifiable and irreversible manner.
