Bali, Indonesia, May 26, 2023.- “The question of Puerto Rico is a colonial situation that must be resolved urgently and in accordance with the UN mandate,” warned Ambassador Yusnier Romero, Alternate Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations, during a Regional Seminar. on Decolonization, held in this Asian nation.
During his speech, Romero Puentes recalled that in 2023 it will be 51 years since the adoption of the first resolution on the colonial question of Puerto Rico. However, despite the multiple efforts deployed, the people of Puerto Rico continue to be unable to exercise their legitimate right to genuine self-determination.
The Cuban representative explained that there are already 40 resolutions or decisions on the subject that reaffirm the inalienable right of the people of Puerto Rico to self-determination and independence, in accordance with resolution 1514 (XV) of the United Nations General Assembly.
He added that the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, imposed more than 60 years ago, was nothing more than a farce and the way found by the United States government to exercise its total domination over this sister Antillean island and mask an act of clear colonial domination.
“Cuba reaffirms the inalienable right of the Puerto Rican people to self-determination and independence, in accordance with General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV), and the applicability of the fundamental principles of said resolution to the question of Puerto Rico,” he declared. .
