The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, spoke this September 18th in the Preparatory Meeting of The Hague Group, where he reaffirmed Cuba’s unshakeable solidarity with the Palestinian people, and condemned Israel’s actions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
The Cuban diplomat denounced the Security Council’s inaction and the complicity of the U.S. Government, whose repeated use of its veto power has prevented the implementation of a ceasefire to end to the Palestinian people’s suffering. He emphasized that each day without international action results in the deaths of more children and aggravates the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
Cuba demanded an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli occupying forces, unrestricted access to humanitarian aid, and the recognition of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations. Likewise, it rejected the refusal and revocation of visas to Palestinian representatives, as this is a violation of the 1947 Headquarters Agreement and the international instruments on diplomatic privileges and immunities.
Ambassador Soberón reaffirmed Cuba’s historic position in favor of a just and lasting solution based on the creation of two states, with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital and within the pre-1967 borders, guaranteeing the right of return for refugees.
Finally, he stressed that the best way of celebrating United Nations’ 80th anniversary is by doing justice and putting a definitive end to the genocide against Palestine.
