Cuba reiterates its support to the comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council.

During the General Assembly debate on Agenda item 122, entitled: “Question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council”, the Cuban Permanent Representative, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, reiterated Cuba's support for a comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council, including its working methods, to make it a truly transparent, democratic and representative body.

In his speech, the Cuban representative highlighted that Cuba has always advocated for the expansion of the Security Council membership in both the permanent and non-permanent categories, to rectify the underrepresentation of developing countries, as they constitute a large part of the UN membership. Furthermore, he expressed that “this is a historic claim.”

Ambassador Soberón Guzmán referred to relevant issues in the debates on the Security Council Reform. In particular, he noted that the Council's annual report submitted to the General Assembly must be comprehensive and analytical of its work. Likewise, he emphasized that Cuba has always opposed the existence of the veto power.

He concluded by reiterating Cuba's willingness to continue participating in the intergovernmental negotiations on the Security Council Reform.
