New York, November 17th, 2023.- Ambassador Yusnier Romero Puentes, Alternate Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, participated on Friday in the General Assembly's debate on agenda item 112: Question of equitable representation and increase in the membership of the Security Council.
During his speech, Romero Puentes reiterated his country's support for a comprehensive reform of the Security Council, including its working methods, to make it a transparent, democratic and representative body.
He explained that in order to achieve this purpose, transparent informal negotiations are required, the adoption of the rules of procedure of the Security Council, which to date remain provisional; the submission to the General Assembly of a comprehensive and analytical annual report on its work, and the expansion of its membership with the aim of rectifying the underrepresentation of developing countries, which constitute a significant number of UN members.
The Cuban diplomat also said that the Council's interference in matters outside its competence must cease, particularly in those matters that fall within the mandate of this General Assembly.
