New York, 16 April 2019. Cuba attended today the thematic meeting on the selection and appointment of the Secretary-General and other executive heads held within the framework of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the Work of the UN General Assembly.
Ambassador Humberto Rivero Rosario called once again to conform with the provisions of the Charter of the organization, the rules of procedure of its principal organs, especially the General Assembly, as well as with the provisions of its relevant resolutions, in particular on the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly, both with regard to the process of selecting and appointing the Secretary-General and other executive heads.
He explained that the selection and appointment of the Secretary-General and other executive heads should be based on best practices and the full participation of all Member States. Likewise, he reiterated, in relation to the appointment of executive heads, that equitable geographical distribution and representation must be guaranteed, as well as gender balance.
Cuba has been supporting the revitalization process of the General Assembly, with the aim of consolidating its democratic and participatory nature.
