Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, spoke today at the Security Council's quarterly open debate on "The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question", in which he reiterated Cuba's firm condemnation of the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.
During his statement, he condemned the deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure, including the only functioning hospital in Gaza City, as well as the blockade of humanitarian supplies. "These acts constitute war crimes that cannot go unpunished. Every minute of inaction increases the suffering and loss of human life," he warned.
The Cuban representative also condemned the expansion of illegal settlements, violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the threat of further territorial occupation. He strongly criticized the paralysis of the Security Council caused by the US veto, which prevents an effective response to the genocide.
He also called for concrete measures to allow unhindered access of humanitarian aid to Gaza and to protect the vital work of UNRWA. He called for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian and Arab territories and an end to aggression against sovereign countries in the region such as Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iran.
"The full admission of Palestine as a member state of the UN can no longer be postponed. The two-state solution, with the pre-1967 borders and East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, is essential for peace," said Soberón Guzmán.
He concluded by reaffirming Cuba's firm solidarity with the Palestinian cause and that of the Arab nations, and called on the Security Council to act immediately.
