Cuba remembers fondly and respectfully the visit of Pope John Paul II

PRESS RELEASE

Geneva. 23 January 2023. The Cuban people and government keep alive, fondly and respectfully, the memory of the apostolic visit of the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II to our country.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of such an important event, we reiterate our sincere gratitude to His Holiness Pope Francis for his expressions of sympathy and for the kind and respectful message addressed to our noble people.

We will continue to work to be the "example of collaboration and mutual help that unites us and reveals the spirit that characterizes us: open, welcoming and supportive", as defined by His Holiness Francis.

Since the process of formation of Cuban nationality and identity, our people have been characterized by a deep belief in faith and by the practice of religious syncretism, which has ensured the coexistence of diverse religions in holy peace.

Since the 1959 revolutionary triumph, the Cuban government has recognized, respected and guaranteed religious freedom. At the same time, it has fostered an environment of unity, brotherhood, solidarity and mutual respect among believers and non-believers.

The Cuban government has maintained good relations with the different religious creeds and institutions present in the country, which enjoy equal consideration before the law. In Cuba, any form of discrimination on these grounds is outlawed.

The different religious groups have an active participation in our political and social life, taking part in the consultation processes of various legal norms and the conduct of welfare activities of community impact.

Cuba will continue to promote the peaceful coexistence of the country's religious creeds and institutions, which contributes to the promotion and protection of the human rights of our people.
