On February 18th 1965, the Republic of The Gambia achieved its independence, putting an end to more than a century of colonial rule and ushering in a new era of self-determination and sovereignty. On the 60th anniversary of this momentous event, the government and people of Cuba express their most sincere congratulations to the sister African nation.
The President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, sent congratulatory messages to their Gambian counterparts, highlighting Gambia's commitment to its sovereign development and the strengthening of African unity.
On behalf of the Caribbean nation, the Cuban Embassy in Gambia participated in the commemorative events organised by the Gambian government, reaffirming the deep historical ties that unite both countries. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1974, Cuba and The Gambia have collaborated significantly in strategic sectors such as health and education, through solidarity cooperation.
The anniversary of Gambia's independence is a propitious occasion to ratify Cuba's will to continue strengthening bilateral ties, based on the principles of mutual respect, solidarity and cooperation.
