Cuba strengthens parliamentary ties of solidarity.

London, November 4 - Ambassador Ismara Vargas Walter recently held a series of important meetings with leading British parliamentarians in the context of the reconstitution of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Cuba in the British Parliament, following the last general elections on July 4.

In her meetings with Labour MPs Paula Barker, Richard Burgon and Steve Witherden, the Ambassador discussed issues of mutual interest and shared her perspective on the current situation in Cuba and the negative impact of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, as well as the additional impact of Cuba's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism.

In the October 29 meeting with Paula Barker, the Ambassador discussed the devastating impact of the blockade on the Cuban economy and the additional unilateral coercive measures resulting from Cuba's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. The meeting also touched on the island's energy crisis, exacerbated by the difficulties in accessing fuel due to the restrictions imposed and the unfavorable global context. Barker, a social justice parliamentarian, reiterated her commitment to defending Cuba's right to self-determination and her rejection of unilateral measures as a method of political pressure.

Richard Burgon, for his part, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Cuban cause and expressed his categorical rejection of Cuba's inclusion in the list of countries sponsoring terrorism, which he considers an unjust and arbitrary measure aimed at suffocating the Cuban economy. Burgon stressed that the blockade and additional measures are exacerbating the island's energy crisis, affecting strategic sectors and making the daily lives of Cubans even more difficult.

On November 4, Steve Witherden expressed concern about the humanitarian impact of the financial restrictions that prevent Cuba from accessing essential goods, especially in a context where the island is recovering from the effects of Hurricane Oscar. Hurricane Oscar caused severe damage to power generation infrastructure and agricultural areas, further complicating the provision of basic services. Witherden expressed his solidarity with the Cuban people and his willingness to work with his colleagues on the APPG on Cuba to mitigate the impact of these measures and contribute to recovery.

The reactivation of the APPG on Cuba is an important development as it provides a platform to strengthen solidarity and cooperation between the peoples of Cuba and the United Kingdom. The Cuban Ambassador highlighted the importance of this group as a space to sensitize British parliamentarians to the challenges facing Cuba, from the blockade to the effects of natural phenomena, and to encourage their commitment to work together.
