Cuba Strengthens Relations with the World Intellectual Property Organization

Geneva, Switzerland, June 16, 2025. His Excellency Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), received the Cuban delegation participating in the 66th Session of the Assemblies of WIPO Member States, led by María de los Angeles Sánchez Torres, Director General of the Cuban Intellectual Property Office (OCPI).

During the cordial exchange, which also included several WIPO officials, the Director General highlighted the island's progress in its governance system based on science and innovation.

The senior international official recognized the serious and professional work carried out by the OCPI, the entity responsible for establishing the legal framework, policy, administration, and management of intellectual property in Cuba.

The Cuban delegation expressed its gratitude for the information presented by WIPO to the UN Secretary-General regarding the damaging impact of the United States' economic, financial, and commercial blockade against Cuba on intellectual property.

WIPO senior officials were briefed on Cuba's activities in the areas of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Industrial Property Policy, Foreign Investment and International Trade Policy, Environmental Policy, and other national development policies.

Likewise, they were updated on the ongoing process to approve a Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Law, which will emphasize the role of innovation in the country's economic and social development and introduce changes to the governance of the STI system.

Information was also provided on the approval of a new Decree-Law on Trademarks and Trade Names, which updates current regulations to take into account new types of trademarks and the development of brands on the Internet and the use of new information technologies.

Cuba's interest in the WIPO Global Innovation Index (GII) was highlighted, and an update was provided on the country's experience in developing an alternative national innovation index. Cuba has joined the Digital Access Service for Priority Documents (DAS), used by Biotechnology Research Centers and some universities in the country, as part of the process of internationalizing its results.

Also participating in the meeting on the Cuban side were Rodolfo Benítez Verson, Cuban Ambassador to the UN in Geneva; Gissell Fleitas Mondejar, Deputy Director of the OCPI; and Madelyn Rodríguez Lara, Counselor at the Mission in Geneva.
