Cuba stresses the urgency of an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

New York,  November 20th, 2023.-  At a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the humanitarian situation in Palestine, held on Monday, Cuba warned that every moment of passivity, double standards or silence will cost more innocent lives.

During his speech, Ambassador Gerardo Peñalver Portal, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, thanked the data offered by representatives of different UN agencies that reflect the seriousness of the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

He said that, despite this urgency, the Security Council has shown itself incapable of rising to the occasion, as it has only been able to approve a resolution that omits the call for a ceasefire and a humanitarian truce, in order to evade, in this way, the U.S. veto.

The Cuban diplomat reiterated that the indiscriminate attacks against the civilian population and UN workers; the bombing of hospitals, ambulances and schools and the massive destruction of homes and vital infrastructure, constitute collective punishment and serious violations of international humanitarian law.

"Nothing can justify the serious violations of international humanitarian law that are being committed against Gaza," he said.

Peñalver Portal also denounced that Israel transgresses all UN resolutions and all its obligations as an occupying power under the Fourth Geneva Convention.

He called for an immediate ceasefire and called on the United States to stop obstructing the Security Council's action in this regard.

Before concluding, the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN said that his country will support and contribute to legitimate international efforts to put an end to the current situation.
