Cuba takes part in the WIPO Diplomatic Conference on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge.

Geneva, May 15, 2024 - From May 13 to 24, Cuba is taking part in the WIPO Diplomatic Conference on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge, being held at the Organization's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

This conference is the final stage of negotiations before the adoption of an international legal instrument that will aim to link, in a transparent and effective way, the global intellectual property system to international agreements on biological biodiversity.

The Cuban delegation is headed by Ambassador Juan Antonio Quintanilla Román, Cuba's Permanent Representative in Geneva, and includes the Director General of the Cuban Industrial Property Office and the Commercial Counselor of the Permanent Mission of Cuba in Geneva.

The Director General of the Cuban Industrial Property Office, Ms María de los Ángeles Sánchez Torres, emphasized in her general statement that the obligation to disclose the country of origin and source of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge constitutes a mechanism for monitoring and ensuring the transparency of the intellectual property system, to the benefit of the system of access to genetic resources and benefit sharing.

Intense working days are scheduled before the conference concludes with the signing of the final act of the binding legal instrument.
