Cuba will continue to advocate for a serious, constructive and realistic diplomatic solution to the current crisis in Ukraine.

New York, February 23, 2023.- In considering the draft resolution “Principles of the Charter of the United Nations on which a general, just and lasting peace in Ukraine is based,” Cuba expressed that it will continue to advocate for a serious, constructive and realistic diplomatic solution to the current crisis. in that country.

Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta, permanent representative to the United Nations, reiterated the island's defense of the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the States and the self-determination of the peoples; opposition - unequivocally - to the use or threat of the use of force and support for the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

He said that, in that same Assembly, Cuba had warned that history would hold the United States government accountable for the consequences of an increasingly offensive military doctrine outside NATO borders, which threatens international peace, security and stability. .

Pedroso rejected any attempt to manipulate the text of the resolution in the future, as a legal basis to justify the eventual creation of courts aimed at carrying out prosecutions at the national and international level. The UN General Assembly does not have a mandate to do so, he noted.

Cuba abstained from voting on the draft resolution, considering that it does not favor or contribute to dialogue and negotiation with the participation of all the parties involved, to achieve real and lasting peace, which is the most urgent objective.
