New York, October 9th, 2023.- Cuba reiterated at the United Nations its willingness to continue promoting the preservation and strengthening of the disarmament machinery, with strict adherence to multilateralism; as well as the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and International Law.
In his intervention, in the general debate of the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, Ambassador Yuri Gala López, alternate permanent representative of the Permanent Mission of Cuba, advocated for the universalization of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Arms Nuclear.
“Nuclear disarmament must remain the top priority in the disarmament sphere. More than a long-standing legitimate aspiration, it is a matter of survival for humanity,” he expressed.
When referring to the new challenges that emerge in the context of international security, the Cuban diplomat pointed out that the military dimension of artificial intelligence needs to have a monitoring framework in the United Nations, in which all Member States participate, with aimed at producing a global result on the use of this technology.
Likewise, Gala López criticized the imposition of unilateral coercive measures, which limit or prevent, in a discriminatory manner, the exercise of the right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy; as well as the promotion of international cooperation and the scientific-technological advance of the Member States in the biological and chemical spheres.
“These illegal actions threaten the socioeconomic development of the States on which they are imposed and contravene the provisions of several legally binding instruments in the field of disarmament,” he said.
