Accra, April 26, 2024. - The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Anette Chao García, received Ghanaian fashion designer Kwaku Bediako, who is the creator of the internationally recognized brand Chocolate.
During the exchange Kuaku Bediako presented the new line of designs called Cocoa, inspired by the responsible use of waste generated by the fashion industry, to mitigate the consequences that are generated each year to the environment.
The fashionista said that worn uniforms will be used by his new brand to make labels, “everything can be reused”, he said. The new line is aimed at making fashion affordable and making us all aware of the damage that waste causes to the environment.
He also said that Cubans, as far as he knows, are resilient and creative people, with a high sense for environmental protection, which is why he thought of the diplomat to present his project.
The diplomatic representative told the designer how interesting and necessary his initiative was in an increasingly globalised world where consumerism is the norm.
She said that the Cuban people are adept at recycling, because the conditions imposed by the US blockade force them to seek creative solutions to everyday problems, and clothing is no exception.
“Taking solutions with what little one has is a fundamental part of life for all Cubans without exception”, the diplomat stated.
She commented that the creator should make the initiative grow so that it would involve the community, “it is important that people know that not everything is: you break and buy something new. With each repair, you put a part of yourself in what is mended”, she said.
In addition, the Cuban Ambassador updated the designer on the battles waged by the Cuban people and government against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US, as well as the struggle to have Cuba removed from the State Sponsors of Terrorism List, and the consequences that this entails for the island.
