Cuban ambassador highlights the 60 years of diplomatic relations with Ghana

The Ambassador of Cuba to Ghana, Pedro Luis Despaigne González, gave an interview about the meaning of the 60 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries to Dr. Kwasi Owusu-Achaw, a Ghanaian graduate of optometry on the Caribbean island in the 80s of the last century.

Dr. Owusu, also a journalist, inquired about the first moments of bilateral relations; the main sectors of cooperation and their effects; the recent visit to Cuba of the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Adddo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; the meaning of the 60 years of diplomatic relations and the actions that are carried out to commemorate them. He was also interested in knowing about the current state of relations between Cuba and the United States.

The Cuban diplomat made reference to the role played by the then Prime Ministers, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro in the foundation of diplomatic relations that will reach his 60th anniversary on December 23rd, he recalled Martín Mora and Dr. Armando Entralgo, first personalities in charge of the opening of the Embassy of Cuba in Ghana. He emphasized the importance for bilateral ties of the visit made by the President of Ghana, and stressed that in the current year more than 200 new Ghanaian doctors will graduate in the Cuban classrooms, and that another 200 will soon start similar studies in the island.

He also asserted that Cuba will resist the pressures to which it is subjected by the current administration, as its people recently ratified their will to continue building Socialism, and not to renounce cooperation with other peoples.

Ambassador Despaigne thanked Dr. Owusu for his ad-hoc work as a researcher and especially for his book dedicated to the ESBECAN Project, which has become a reference work for interested in the presence in Cuba of more than two thousand young people Ghanaians, who for more than a decade studied in Cuban classrooms.

Dr. Owusu also interviewed other members of the staff of the Embassy, who emphasized the historical ties of friendship and collaboration between the peoples of Cuba and Ghana.
