Cuban Ambassador highlights advances in Biotechnology through newspaper article

Embajadora cubana resalta avances de la biotecnología a través de artículo periodístico

The Ambassador of Cuba to Grenada, Yadirys Echenique Paz, recently published an article highlighting the role of Cuban biotechnology. Her text, released by the Grenadian outlet The New Today, underscores that this sector has become one of the most dynamic in the Island, capable of generating unique products worldwide while maintaining a humanist vocation amid an adverse scenario.

In her analysis, the diplomat recalled that institutions such as the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) and the BioCubaFarma business group have placed Cuba on the international map of science applied to health. “Cuban biotechnology has consolidated itself as one of the most strategic and dynamic sectors of the Island,” she wrote. In this regard, the article highlights Cuba’s capacity to provide solutions that benefit both its own population and patients in other countries.

At another point, the Cuban official detailed that BioCubaFarma comprises 48 companies—34 in Cuba and 14 abroad—and brings together more than 15,000 highly qualified workers. In addition, eight of its institutions have been recognized as High Technology Enterprises, and its products are marketed in more than 40 countries. Among the most relevant advances are vaccines against meningitis and hepatitis B, diagnostic systems, and widely used medicines.

The Ambassador devoted special attention to the HEBERSaVax project, a therapeutic cancer vaccine that interrupts the supply of nutrients and oxygen to tumors while stimulating the immune system. Regarding its results, she noted: “Phase II clinical trials have yielded encouraging outcomes… complete responses and notable improvements in quality of life have been recorded.” These advances, she affirmed, open new perspectives in the fight against solid tumors.

The article also illustrates how Cuban scientific development takes place under the weight of the U.S. economic blockade, which between March 2024 and February 2025 caused losses of 129 million dollars in the sector. The case of Heberprot‑P, a unique medication for treating diabetic foot ulcers, exemplifies the restrictions imposed. Nevertheless, according to the diplomat, Cuban biotechnology maintains its humanist vocation and stands as a pillar of international cooperation in defense of the right to health.
