Suva, June 18, 2026.—Fiji’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Honorable Sakiasi Ditoka, received the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Néstor Torres Olivera, on a courtesy visit. Minister Ditoka congratulated Ambassador on his appointment and expressed his full confidence that relations between Fiji and Cuba will reach new levels of success during his tenure.
During the meeting, the Minister thanked Cuba for its continued support of Fiji, placing special emphasis on the medical scholarships awarded to Fijian students. He also highlighted recent milestones in cooperation, such as the Memorandum of Understanding on sports development—signed in 2024 between Cuba and the Fijian Ministry of Youth and Sports—and the Visa Waiver Agreement, designed to create greater opportunities in trade, investment, and cultural exchange. The Honorable Ditoka reaffirmed his Ministry’s commitment to working in close collaboration with the Cuban Embassy to deepen bilateral cooperation in areas of priority for both nations.
Fiji and Cuba have maintained cordial diplomatic relations since 2002. These ties were significantly strengthened in 2017 with the official opening of Cuba’s diplomatic mission in Fiji.
