The Ambassador of Cuba to Grenada, Yadirys Echenique Paz, held a meeting with former Grenadian Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, during which she expressed gratitude for the Caribbean leader’s contributions to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
In this regard, the diplomat highlighted that during Mitchell’s years of leadership, relations between Cuba and Grenada found a space for recovery and consolidation, marked by gestures of trust and cooperation in strategic sectors such as health and education. She underscored that his support was decisive in relaunching ties after the period of estrangement that followed the U.S. invasion of 1983.
For his part, Mitchell voiced his support for Cuba in the face of the difficulties caused by the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States. He reiterated that Caribbean solidarity is a non-negotiable principle, affirming that Cuba can always count on Grenada’s voice in defense of its sovereignty.
During the meeting, Mitchell recalled his visits to Havana and his encounters with Cuban leaders. He especially remembered Fidel Castro’s visit to Grenada in 1998, which he described as a historic moment for the region that consolidated the friendship between the two peoples.
The Cuban diplomat also emphasized that the friendship cultivated between Fidel and Mitchell constitutes a legacy that transcends generations and continues to inspire the strengthening of bilateral ties today. She noted that the memory of those encounters serves as a reminder that cooperation and solidarity are pillars of the Cuba–Grenada relationship.
Keith Mitchell, a member of the House of Representatives, is recognized for his historic leadership at the helm of the New National Party (NNP). He is also the longest-serving head of government in Grenada’s history.
