Cuban Ambassador Holds Meeting with the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Abuja, 28 January 2026.– The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, held a cordial meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, at the headquarters of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, both parties exchanged views on their mutual interest in continuing to strengthen and expand bilateral cooperation in areas of common interest, in line with the excellent diplomatic relations existing between Cuba and Nigeria.

The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to review the state of bilateral relations between Nigeria and Cuba, exchange views on pressing international issues, and reaffirm their shared commitment to peace, multilateralism and international law.

The Permanent Secretary highlighted the Nigerian Government’s recognition of the strength, resilience and dignity of the Cuban people in the face of adversity, reiterating Nigeria’s consistent support for Cuba, as well as its firm commitment to respect for international law and the principles of sovereignty and self-determination.

For her part, the Cuban Ambassador expressed appreciation for the repeated demonstrations of solidarity from the Government and people of Nigeria, and underscored the deep historical, cultural and fraternal ties that unite both peoples, forged on the basis of mutual respect, cooperation and friendship.

Ambassador Morales took the opportunity to denounce the actions of the Government of the United States against the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, particularly against Cuba. In this regard, she outlined the profound damage caused by the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on the Island, as well as its intensification, which directly affects the Cuban people, generates multi-million-dollar losses to the country’s development, and contributes to a situation of unjust and deliberate isolation.

The Ambassador described the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States against Cuba as inhumane, cruel and genocidal in nature, aimed at a people who, throughout their history, have consistently advocated for peace, solidarity and cooperation among nations.

She called for greater international understanding and cooperation, highlighting Cuba’s commitment to peaceful engagement, social development, free education, universal healthcare and gender inclusion. She reaffirmed Cuba’s openness to dialogue based on mutual respect and non-interference.

The Cuban Ambassador was accompanied by the Third Secretary of the Embassy, ​​Ana Flavia Gomez Pavot, while the Nigerian counterpart was also represented by the Director of the Department of America and the Caribbean, Ambassador Aisha Dewa.

The meeting took place in an atmosphere of cordiality and reaffirmed the determination of both nations to continue consolidating their historic and diplomatic ties.
