Kingston, Jamaica, 31 May 2020. The Head of the State Mission of the Republic of Cuba in Jamaica, Ambassador Inés Fors Fernández, was one of the speakers invited to participate in the ‘Caribbean and Latin American peoples’ conference on our Covid-19 experiences and lessons,‘ carried out today under the sponsorship of the Jamaica Peace Council and other solidarity organizations in Jamaica, the Caribbean and Latin America, with the purpose of forming a regional peoples' network to support integration, peaceful cooperation and resilience against environmental and health threats.
In her speech, the Cuban diplomat pointed to the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba and the smear campaign against the Cuban medical cooperation abroad, as two important obstacles that our country has had to overcome in its battle against the pandemic inside and outside the national territory.
The Conference, in which almost a hundred prominent personalities from various fields of social life in the region participated, issued a declaration calling for unity, cooperation, integration and mobilization of peoples in defence of their most genuine demands. It recognized Cuba's internationalist assistance in sending abroad specialized medical personnel from the Henry Reeve Contingent and the development of medications for the treatment of patients affected by Covid-19. It expressed its support for the proposal to award Cuba the Nobel Peace Prize for its outstanding contribution to the fight against the pandemic and joined the call of the United Nations and the World Health Organization to cease all military attacks and to lift the cruel and illegal sanctions imposed against Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Iran and 35 other nations.
