Cuban Ambassador meets with Labour Party Member of Parliament

Wellington, 15 April 2026. — The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to New Zealand, Luis Ernesto Morejón Rodríguez, held a cordial meeting with Member of Parliament and Labour Party spokesperson for foreign affairs, Vanushi Walters.

The meeting formed part of the Ambassador’s regular and systematic engagement with representatives of the different political forces in New Zealand’s Parliament.

During the exchange, the parties discussed issues of mutual interest, as well as the current regional and international situation.

The occasion provided an opportunity for the Cuban Ambassador to brief the parliamentarian on the main challenges facing Cuba, particularly in light of the increased hostility of the United States policy towards the Island. He referred to the tightening of these measures following the executive order signed by President Donald Trump, which designates Cuba as an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security.

The Cuban diplomat also expressed appreciation for the expressions of solidarity and support towards Cuba by members of the New Zealand Labour Party, including their endorsement in December 2024 of the letter promoted by the Progressive International calling for an end to United States sanctions against Cuba.

The meeting took place in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, allowing for an exchange of views on the situation in Cuba and the importance of continuing to strengthen dialogue and mutual understanding.
