Cuban Ambassador Meets with Rotorua Mayor and Agrees to Bring Cuban Art Exhibition to the City

Wellington, 19 August 2025 – The Ambassador of Cuba to New Zealand, Luis Ernesto Morejón Rodríguez, paid a working visit to the city of Rotorua, where he held a meeting with Mayor Tania Tōgiatama.

During the cordial meeting, both authorities discussed opportunities for cooperation in the cultural and community spheres, underscoring the importance of ties between Cuba and New Zealand at the local level. As a result of the exchange, it was agreed to present an exhibition by renowned Cuban visual artist Yosvany Martínez Pérez in Rotorua at the beginning of next year.

The exhibition, which reflects a contemporary vision of Cuban art, was presented last year at the New Zealand Parliament to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and will next be inaugurated on 24 September in Christchurch in tribute to the Day of Cuban Culture.

Mayor Tōgiatama emphasized the significance of this initiative for the cultural life of Rotorua, a city renowned for its rich Māori heritage and its role as a major artistic and tourist center in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Ambassador Morejón Rodríguez expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and reiterated the Embassy of Cuba's commitment to continue fostering cultural exchange as a bridge to further strengthen friendship and mutual understanding between the Cuban and New Zealand peoples.
