Wellington, 12 May 2025 — The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to New Zealand, Luis Ernesto Morejón Rodríguez, and his family warmly welcomed His Excellency Archbishop Gábor Pintér, Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See, and his Secretary, Reverend Giosuè Busti, at the Ambassador’s residence.
During the cordial gathering, the Cuban Ambassador reaffirmed Cuba’s strong commitment to further strengthening diplomatic relations with the Holy See, which this year marks the 90th anniversary of their official establishment.
The evening provided a meaningful opportunity to reflect on key moments in the bilateral relationship, notably the apostolic visits to Cuba by Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis, as well as the visits made to the Island in 2008 and 2011 by the newly elected Pope Leo XIV in his former capacity as Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine.
As a gesture of appreciation and respect, the Cuban Ambassador presented Archbishop Pintér with an engraving of Havana Cathedral by renowned Cuban visual artist Yosvany Martínez Pérez, a tribute to the island’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
The reception was held in an atmosphere of mutual respect, fraternal dialogue, and shared willingness to continue deepening ties between Cuba and the Holy See.
