Abuja, February 20, 2025 – In a cordial and cooperative atmosphere, the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, held a courtesy meeting with the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Bianca Ojukwu. During the meeting, both diplomats reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to continue expanding and deepening cooperation in strategic sectors such as energy, education, and health.
Ambassador Morales Palmero updated Minister Ojukwu on the concrete steps being taken to strengthen bilateral collaboration in these key areas. She specifically highlighted progress on joint projects aimed at promoting the exchange of knowledge and resources for the sustainable development of both nations.
The Cuban Ambassador also referred to the strong historical and cultural ties that unite Cuba and Nigeria, recalling the connection forged during the colonial period with the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to Cuba, many of whom came from Nigeria. In this context, she emphasized the influence of Nigerian culture and traditions on Cuban identity, particularly in music, religion, and cuisine.
For her part, Minister Ojukwu praised the excellent state of relations between both countries in multilateral forums, emphasizing their cooperation in organizations such as the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the African Union (AU), and more recently, BRICS. She also acknowledged Cuba’s high capacity in key sectors such as biotechnology, health, and education, highlighting the Caribbean nation’s contributions to Nigeria’s development in these areas through technical assistance and training programs.
The meeting, marked by a spirit of friendship and mutual understanding, reaffirmed both nations’ willingness to continue promoting cooperative initiatives that benefit their peoples. As part of efforts to strengthen these relations, Ambassador Morales Palmero extended an invitation to Minister Ojukwu to visit Cuba and witness firsthand the island’s advancements in sectors of shared interest.
This meeting reflects the shared commitment of Cuba and Nigeria to building a relationship based on solidarity, cooperation, and mutual respect, thereby consolidating their roles as strategic allies on the international stage.
