Colombo, April 29, 2025. The Cuban Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Andrés Marcelo González Garrido, along with Ms. H. G. Apsara Caldera, Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Education, participated in a meeting at the Ministry's headquarters with candidates who applied to study medicine in Cuba.
Several young people interested in studying this degree participated in the meeting, expressing their interest in training as professionals in a country with such a high level of healthcare, which has a high rate of medical graduates per capita, and is recognized for its free, quality healthcare and the cooperation it provides to other countries around the world.
Sri Lanka has more than 100 graduates from Cuban institutions, and currently five Sri Lankans are studying at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), an international university that is part of Cuba's Comprehensive Health Program and welcomes students from countries in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
In the selection process were the Ambassador and the Secretary of Education and also rofessor Gominda Ponnamperuna of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Dr. Pradeep Kalansooriya of the Department of Computer Science, Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), Chiththadhamma Rathnamudali, President of the Association of Sri Lankan Graduates in Cuba and Maribel Duarte Gonzalez, First Secretary of the Cuban Embassy in Colombo.
