Cuban Ambassador Pays a Courtesy Visit on the Director General of the United Nations Division at the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Islamabad, March 12, 2026. Cuban Ambassador Damián Cordero Torres paid a courtesy call on Mr. Umer Siddique, Director General of the United Nations (UN) Division at the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Following introductions by both parties, the Cuban Ambassador thanked the Director General for facilitating the visit despite his busy schedule. He then briefly commented on the difficult energy situation facing many countries, including Pakistan, resulting from the war unleashed in the Middle East by Israel and the United States against Iran, as well as the need to halt hostilities between the parties and the importance of the international community in promoting that objective. The energy issue prompted the Cuban Ambassador to update Mr. Siddique on the current situation facing the Cuban people, resulting from the coercive measures of the U.S. administration, especially the blockade that makes it impossible to import oil to Cuba and undermines daily life in the country. In this regard, the Cuban Ambassador also took the opportunity to thank the diplomat and Director General for Pakistan’s vote at the United Nations in favor of lifting the blockade, which the U.S. government seeks to impose on the island in all its forms.

Mr. Siddique expressed his gratitude for the visit and recalled Cuba’s masterful diplomacy, particularly at the United Nations, both in the General Assembly and in the commissions in Geneva. A particularly moving moment was his acknowledgment of the solidarity and dedication of the Cuban medical personnel who saved thousands of lives in the mountains of his country during the 2005 earthquake. Both representatives agreed on the value of the meeting, which marks a starting point for their work.
