Kingston, Jamaica, 17 May 2019. The Ambassador of Cuba to Jamaica, H.E Mrs. Inés Fors Fernández, and Ambassador Marsha Coore Lobban, Acting Director of the Caribbean and Americas Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, met today at the headquarters of this Ministry to review the main issues of the bilateral agenda and other matters of common interest.
At the meeting, the Ambassador of Cuba thanked the strong position of Jamaica and all other member states of CARICOM against the Helms Burton Act and in favor of the lifting of the US blockade against Cuba, which they showed during the 22nd Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations held in St. George, Granada, on May 13 and 14, 2019.
On that occasion, when Jamaica was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, the member states of CARICOM issued a joint statement expressing their concern "about the new measures taken under Title III of the Helms Burton Act and announced by the US Government to strengthen the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba" and about its "adverse impact on the socioeconomic development of Cuba and the welfare of its people." They also denounced "the enforcement of extraterritorial laws and measures contrary to international law" and ratified their adherence to the guiding principles of that discipline.
