Colombo, September 5, 2024. The Cuban ambassador to Sri Lanka, Andrés Marcelo González Garrido, visited the Coconut Research Institute in Sri Lanka where he was received by its Chairman , Mr. Arosha Rodrigo, the director, Dr. N. S. Arachchige and the rest of its board of directors. Also present was Maribel Duarte González, first secretary of the Cuban embassy.
During the meeting, they discussed the possibilities of cooperation between the Coconut Research Institute in Sri Lanka and the Cuban Agroforestry Research Institute.
This institution recently donated 200 coconut seeds to Cuba to develop this production in Cuban plantations. There is great interest on both sides in developing the collaboration. The Sri Lanka Coconut Research Institute is the first of its kind in the world dedicated to coconut research and was established in 1929. The institute contributes to the development of new varieties of coconut and has found innovative solutions to the problems facing this crop.
