The Hague, May 20, 2026. Cuban Ambassador Eva Yelina Silva Walker met with Monsignor Jan Thomas Limchua, Chargé d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
During the meeting, they highlighted the positive and historic diplomatic ties between Cuba and the Holy See, as well as the mutual respect and understanding that have characterized them. They recalled the memorable visits to the Caribbean island by Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis, as well as those made to the Vatican by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, Army General Raúl Castro, and President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
Ambassador Silva referred to the humanitarian impact of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the U.S. government for more than six decades—which has intensified to unprecedented levels in recent years—and described the energy blockade against the island as yet another act of cruelty and punishment against a noble, sovereign, and independent country that poses no threat to the national security of any nation.
Thomas Limchua noted that the Holy See has always defended peace and reconciliation among nations in the face of violence and conflict, emphasizing the protection of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.
Both interlocutors highlighted the Holy Mass celebrated at the Vatican last Sunday for peace and development in Cuba. They expressed their satisfaction with the meeting.
